The Signing Ceremony of the “1+1+1” Master Program between School of Government and University of Leeds was Successfully Held

In the afternoon of March 6, the signing ceremony of the “1+1+1” master program between the School of Government and the University of Leeds was held in Conference Room 301, Huiyuan Building. More than ten persons, including Yu Haisui, Executive Vice President & Provost of University of Leeds, Roger Slee, Director of International Affairs of the School of Sociology and Social Policy of the University of Leeds, Zhang Xueji, Vice President of Shenzhen University, Jiang Jianwu, Deputy Director of Department of International Exchange and Cooperation of Shenzhen University, Chen Wen, Secretary of Party Committee of School of Government, and Gu Zhijun, Deputy Dean of School of Government, attended the signing ceremony.

Vice President Zhang Xueji first delivered a speech on behalf of Shenzhen University, pointing out that the University of Leeds is a top public research university in the UK, ranked 86th in the QS World University Rankings 2023, and enjoys a very high international reputation worldwide. As a top social policy research base in the UK, the School of Sociology and Social Policy of the University of Leeds has trained a large number of outstanding academic figures and made outstanding achievements in disability studies, gender studies, family studies and other fields. The School of Government of Shenzhen University is a newly established school of our university in 2021. Over the past two years, the school has seized the major opportunities of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the construction of the pilot demonstration zone of socialism with Chinese characteristics, focused on gathering high-level experts and educational discipline resources at home and abroad, and actively carried out international educational cooperation and exchanges. At present, it has established a series of innovative cooperation with countries such as the United Kingdom, South Korea, Singapore, Laos and Malaysia. The joint master program between the School of Sociology and Social Policy of University of Leeds and the School of Government of Shenzhen University is only the first step in the cooperation between the two sides. There will certainly be more cooperation in the future on the cultivation of international students, the construction of international majors and courses, and international academic cooperation.

Yu Haisui, Vice President of University of Leeds, and Professor Roger Slee delivered speeches respectively. Vice President Yu Haisui introduced the history, scale, discipline construction and faculty of University of Leeds. As a red brick university and a member of Russell Group, University of Leeds has always been known for its scientific research strength and internationalization. It has partner universities and research institutes around the world, mainly conducting in-depth research on global challenges. The cooperation with the School of Government begins with postgraduate teaching. In the future, it is hoped to further strengthen the cooperation on scientific research, build an international platform for scientific research cooperation, and jointly promote the development of the two universities.

Professor Roger Slee introduced the development history of the School of Sociology and Social Policy over the past 75 years. Since its establishment, the school has enjoyed an international reputation for setting new agendas, developing new concepts and methods, and social reform research that changes policy and practice. Its excellent teaching and study experience have been recognized by the society, and its research fields are unique and broad, including gender, disability studies, racism and race, family and life course, health technology, social and political thought, etc. In the context of changing society and complex international relations, the cooperation has opened a new chapter in education, and it is very meaningful for both sides to continue to share knowledge in this field, promote the construction of social science disciplines, and help students experience multiculturalism.

Professor Chen Wen delivered a speech on behalf of the School of Government, introducing that the School of Government is a new school with multiple key research bases and solid scientific research strength. The School of Sociology and Social Policy of University of Leeds is a top social policy research base in the UK. The cooperation for the joint master program with the University of Leeds is an innovative exploration of the school on international exchange and cooperation and talent training. Meanwhile, as the two sides have common key development areas in the academic field, such as disability studies, family studies, social policy research, etc., it is hoped that the two sides will have deeper cooperation and make their due contributions to the eastern and western civilization and cultural interaction.

In the end, the two sides held a signing ceremony for the master program and took a group photo.
